It is a 1/87th scale model, mostly scratchbuilt, except the main structure (walls, decking and hull) of a sternwheeler from the 1920’s, or near abouts. The model is made all of wood and is about 13″ long.

Jul 22, 2021 · Mix a larger amount of dilute pinky peach colour and lightly wash it over whole face except eyes. Add a wash of the darkest black to the pupils and a dark grey/black for lashes. The painting isn’t finished at this point. The skin tones are still blotchy and should have more layers of washes to even them out.

Now, it’s a hue, PbK 9: calcium phosphate (78%), calcium carbonate (8%) with small quantities of calcium sulphate, magnesium phosphate, calcium sulfide and other soluble salts. Lamp Black, PBk7: Inorganic; Amorphous carbon from soot.

Mediums: Van Eyck used drying oils with lead (“lead-oil”) and protein (probably from eggs) for most colors. Lead-oil has a tedency to turn yellow and to crack, but the emulsification with egg probably prevented this.

I’ve used a 4”x4” piece of hard red plastic for years that really helps nail down values when starting a painting especially with complex landscapes or a still life with a ton of distracting colors. It simplifies values for me into simple value shapes. (My eyes get tired of squinting)

Jan 8, 2016 · totally agree, although 15 minutes every hour seems extreme to me. Why even bother painting? I have found that painting in the morning about 2 hours, then having lunch, away from all art, maybe cup of the afterwards, then painting again two-three hours, is much better than a 6 hour stretch.
