The European Union’s top trade negotiator has signaled the bloc will continue trying to reach a deal with the U.S. after President Donald Trump threatened a 30% tariff on goods from the bloc and Mexico over the weekend.

US President Donald Trump has announced that all imports from the EU and Mexico will have a 30% tariff as of August 1. He sent letters to EU President Ursula von der Leyen and Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum informing them of the new rates, which were also posted on his Truth Social account on Saturday.

President Donald Trump threatened a 35% tariff on some Canadian goods and raised the prospect of increasing levies on most other countries, ramping up his trade rhetoric in comments that weighed on stocks and boosted the US dollar.
