Celebrating July 4th On July 4, 1776, the 13 colonies claimed their independence from England, an event which eventually led to the formation of the United States.

The first celebration of the U.S. Flag's birthday was held in 1877, on the 100th anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777.
