Fans who ship them as a couple have nicknamed the pairing as "Gelphie." Not only has this been one of the biggest lesbian ships on Broadway, but the new Wicked movie starring Cynthia Erivo (as Elphaba) and Ariana Grande (as Glinda) is making this even more popular (pun intended)!

Early on, “Wicked” costume designer Paul Tazewell decided that the beauty of Oz needed to be reflected in the wardrobes of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande). This would help define their identities as part of the magical world envisioned by director Jon M. Chu. He took inspiration from “Oz,” the “ Wicked ” novel, and nature.

Grande’s longtime vocal coach, Eric Vetro, who’s worked with her since she was 13, played a key role in helping her embody Glinda. Through a series of physical and vocal exercises, Vetro focused on building “muscle memory” to make her transformation feel natural.

Wicked: For Good, which lands in theaters this Thanksgiving, will continue Elphaba and Glinda's story as Elphaba becomes known as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda solidifies her political position in Oz while navigating their relationship as they choose increasingly divergent paths.

But in 2024’s Wicked, the majority of the songs, largely sung by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, are just as good as the original recordings featuring Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel. Some of the movie tracks, dare I say, are even better than their stage equivalents.
