Apple is set to be fined by the European Union's antitrust regulators under the bloc's landmark rules aimed at reining in the power of Big Tech, making it the first company to be sanctioned, sources with direct knowledge of the matter said on Tuesday.

The European Union's Digital Markets Act may lead to the first fine against Apple after repeated failed attempts to comply with the word and spirit of the law.

The penalty, under the tough new Digital Markets Act (DMA), is set to come just months after Cupertino, California-based Apple was hit with a €1.8 billion (US$2 billion) fine for similar abuses under the bloc’s traditional competition rules – involving music streaming service Spotify.
