“For far too long the United States has minted pennies which literally cost us more than 2 cents,” Trump wrote in a post in February, according to NBC News. “This is so wasteful! I have instructed my Secretary of the U.S. Treasury to stop producing new pennies.”

US Treasurer Brandon Beach presided over the stamping of the final set of coins at the Philadelphia Mint Wednesday after President Donald Trump ordered the coin discontinued earlier this year.
"The cost savings of ending penny production will save the American taxpayer approximately $56 million a year in just production cost alone," he said. President Trump wrote on Truth Social in February that minting pennies costs more than 2 cents. "This is so wasteful," he wrote.
