The world's oldest person is now 116-year-old Brazilian nun Inah Canabarro Lucas, who was born 16 days after Tomiko Itooka.

ASHIYA, Japan (WKRC) - The oldest person in the world, a Japanese woman, passed away at the age of 116. Tomiko Itooka was born in May of 1908, was married at 20, and took over her husband's textile factory during World War II.

Tomiko Itooka, a Japanese woman who was the world’s oldest person according to Guinness World Records, has died, an Ashiya city official said Saturday. She was 116.

The world’s oldest person, Tomiko Itooka, died the night of Dec. 29. She died from natural causes and lived to be 116 years and 220 days old.

Born in 1908, she raised four children, ran a family textile factory during World War II, and remained an avid hiker into her 80s.
