The office of Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr sent a letter to the members of Georgia’s State Election Board Friday morning telling them some of the planned rule changes to election policies ahead of the presidential race may violate state law.

Three Donald Trump loyalist Georgia State Election Board members adopted a contentious rule Friday requiring the hand counting of paper ballots cast during the upcoming Nov. 5 Election Day despite warnings from county election directors that it could lead to more delays with reporting results this fall.

The election board voted 3-2 to approve the rule, going against the advice of the state attorney general's office, the secretary of state's office and an association of county election officials.

Republicans advanced the ballot hand-counting measure over the opposition of Georgia’s Republican secretary of state and attorney general and dozens of local election officials.

In an emerging battleground state where President Joe Biden won by fewer than 12,000 votes in 2020, the requirement is just the latest election rule change from the board's new conservative majority.
