Virginia has become one of the nation’s top states for gaming and most of the state’s oversight is handled through the Virginia Lottery – an agency that has grown 20% larger to accommodate those responsibilities.

Virginia is for winners. A Mega Millions player in Virginia clinched the historic $348 million jackpot Friday night, ending a 20-draw drought and the lottery’s first major win since the game was revamped in April.

Lottery players in West Virginia can choose from popular national games like the Powerball and Mega Millions, which are available in the vast majority of states.

“I was just in shock,” Chomedy Hatton, from Suffolk, told the Virginia Lottery, according to a June 27 news release. Hatton turned a $10 Jewel 7s scratch-off ticket into a $500,000 top prize win, lottery officials said. “I told my mom, and she started screaming!” Hatton said, according to lottery officials.

The Virginia Lottery has added computer-generated Virtual Sports draw games to its iLottery platform, the first time the product has entered a US lottery program.

A Mega Millions ticket sold in Virginia matched all six numbers on Friday, June 27, to win an estimated $348 million jackpot.

Mega Millions tickets are sold in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Tickets are $5 each and include a randomly assigned multiplier, multiplying the base prize levels by 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X or 10X.
