Skarloey is a red narrow gauge saddle tank engine and the oldest narrow gauge engine on the Skarloey Railway. Did you know? In The Railway Series, Skarloey is Sudric for "Lake in the Woods".
Skarloey is now the respected leader of the Skarloey Railway. Skarloey's small gauge model was originally used in series' 4 and 5 (in the episode Duncan Gets Spooked, the model was used as Rusty's Ghost Engine that fell off an Old Iron Bridge into a ravine).
Skarloey is a recurring character in Thomas & Friends. Sadly, he was flanderized from the seventh to twelfth seasons. He was flanderized beyond recognition, as he went from being an older, kinder, wise, responsible, and passionate engine, to an idiot child.
Skarloey is one of the oldest engines on the Narrow Gauge Railway and has his own branchline - the Skarloey Railway. He is kind and wise and watches over all the engines who work at the Blue Mountain Quarry. Skarloey is based on a modified Fletcher Jennings & Co. 0-4-0ST narrow gauge engine.
Skarloey went from a wise old hard-worker who could be slightly mischievous at times to a reckless hyper child. His character was already on the decline starting from Season 6 but it was the Hit era that killed him.
Skarloey was the first engine on the Skarloey Railway when he first arrived on Sodor in 1865. Skarloey is known to be very brave and sometimes very pompous too.
Some of my favorite of the world's railways are narrow gauge, and watching Thomas & Friends and reading the Railway Series books as a boy, some of my favorite stories were the books that included the Skarloey and Mid-Sodor railways and the others that didn't make it on television.
